Russell dominates Baku qualifying as Antonelli crashes out
George Russell delivered one of the standout qualifying performances of his career, storming to pole for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix by almost a second over Charles Leclerc.
The Mercedes driver topped both Q1 and Q2 before producing a near-perfect final lap to claim his fifth pole position of the season. The result gives Russell a major opportunity to reduce his 81-point championship deficit to teammate Kimi Antonelli.
Antonelli endured his worst qualifying result of the season after crashing into the wall at Turn 1 during Q1. The championship leader accepted responsibility for the incident, saying changing grip levels caught him out. He will start from 16th, although he remains confident Mercedes has the pace to recover during Sunday's 51-lap race.
Leclerc and Piastri complete the top three. Charles Leclerc secured second for Ferrari, but admitted the gap to Russell was considerably larger than expected. Oscar Piastri qualified third, matching his best qualifying result of the season. The McLaren driver was satisfied with the team's position but concerned by the sizeable gap to Mercedes. Gusty and constantly changing winds made the car particularly difficult to manage.
Lando Norris qualified fifth after a late error, with Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly, and Max Verstappen completing the next positions. Carlos Sainz and Franco Colapinto rounded out the top ten, although Sainz's penalty means Lawson will move up the grid.
Lawson misses Q3 by the narrowest of margins. Liam Lawson qualified 12th after narrowly missing Q3. Racing Bulls had improved the car considerably from practice, but Lawson struggled on his final lap after failing to pick up a useful slipstream along Baku's long straights. He will start 11th following Sainz's penalty.
Teammate Arvid Lindblad qualified 15th, while Alpine's Isack Hadjar produced an impressive fourth-place result. McLaren expecting a difficult race.
Piastri and Norris both acknowledged that McLaren's lack of straight-line speed could make Sunday's race difficult. Piastri doesn't expect to challenge Russell directly for victory, while Norris suggested the team's podium prospects could be limited by its performance on Baku's long straights.
