McLaren was disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix due to excessive plank wear, which resulted in Max Verstappen gaining 25 points on Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. This reduced Norris's lead over Verstappen to 24 points.
Andrea Stella apologized for the loss of points and acknowledged the team's error in ride heights.
Despite the setback, McLaren is focused on the remaining races, especially Qatar, which is expected to suit their car.
The team believes Norris and Piastri should be in podium contention there. McLaren has used its last chance and cannot make any more mistakes, including its drivers.
The 2024 event showed Norris and Piastri performed well in the sprint but underperformed in qualifying. Norris received a penalty, dropping him to tenth.
Piastri has faced recent struggles with pace and incidents, and is still seeking his first podium in seven grands prix. Norris, however, is in a strong position to win his first world championship by outscoring Verstappen.
Despite past doubts, Norris has improved his mental game and approaches each race with a winning mentality, treating it like any other race weekend. Norris talks a good game, but a potential title decider at Yas Marina is set to be a nervy affair.
While the door is ajar for Verstappen, Norris holds all the cards to slam it shut again this weekend and avoid a showdown altogether.
