Antonelli Wins Belgium GP!

The Italian led from pole, initially fending off Max Verstappen. A mid-race Virtual Safety Car allowed Leclerc to take the lead, but Antonelli regained it with 10 laps left, finishing 1.9 seconds ahead and extending his championship lead over Lewis Hamilton to 45 points. Hamilton finished fourth behind Verstappen and might lose more ground due to a Ferrari investigation for an unsafe pit release. Despite this, Hamilton’s points and Antonelli’s win were crucial after George Russell crashed out on the first lap at Spa following contact with Hamilton. Russell, who started the weekend strong, now trails his teammate by two grand prix victories entering the summer break.

Oscar Piastri finished fifth but could move to fourth if Hamilton is penalized. He battled Ferraris and dueled with McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who ended seventh, just behind Isack Hadjar. Gabriel Bortoleto secured consecutive points for Audi, while Arvid Lindblad continued his streak in ninth, ahead of Alpine’s Franco Colapinto. Antonelli celebrated his first victory since Monaco, expressing satisfaction with overcoming challenges and regaining the lead after a Virtual Safety Car. He emphasized the season's unpredictability, citing Russell's recent retirement as an example.

Today, we were fortunate in the championship, highlighting the importance of seizing every opportunity as things can change quickly. We must keep performing well and delivering results to see what unfolds by year's end. Leclerc believed a victory was possible until the finish, acknowledging luck's role in his race. He felt the VSC timing favored him, and despite struggling with the front axle on hard tires for a few laps, the pace was strong, and he felt more comfortable with the car, noting progress but recognizing more work is needed.

Verstappen was satisfied with securing third place, having done everything possible despite the Virtual Safety Car working against him. He noted the first stint was manageable, but the second was more challenging, and both he and Kimi were unlucky with the VSC. Verstappen felt finishing P3 was a good result. Despite the typical rain absent in Belgium, a threat of a shower loomed as the race began in dry conditions. Pole-sitter Antonelli led into La Source, while Verstappen impressively overtook through Eau Rouge.

The Dutchman couldn't maintain the lead on the Kemmel Straight, as Antonelli surged ahead again before Leclerc also overtook Verstappen at Les Combes.

In the fight for the lead, Russell and Hamilton collided when the Mercedes driver tried to make a move on his former teammate at Les Combes.

Russell spun into the gravel, ending his race and marking his second DNF of the season, which brought out the Safety Car. Hamilton received a five-second penalty for his involvement in the incident.

Drama unfolded when Carlos Sainz sent Esteban Ocon into the gravel, causing Haas teammate Oliver Bearman to also veer off to avoid contact. Liam Lawson capitalized on the chaos, advancing from ninth to sixth and overtaking teammate Lindblad. The Safety Car exited at the end of Lap 4, with Antonelli leading over Leclerc. Hamilton overtook Piastri for fourth at La Source, but the McLaren driver regained the position approaching Eau Rouge, as Antonelli extended his lead to over a second.

Verstappen overtook Leclerc for second at Les Combes on Lap 6. Norris moved to ninth by passing Bortoleto’s Audi and claimed eighth from Colapinto’s Alpine two laps later. Piastri challenged Leclerc for third, making slight contact at Les Combes, which broke a piece of Piastri's front wing and caused floor damage. Despite this, Piastri continued pursuing Leclerc, though Hamilton overtook him for fourth at the same corner on Lap 9. Stewards investigated but took no action against Leclerc.

Antonelli led Verstappen by 1.5 seconds on Lap 10, while Norris overtook Lawson for seventh. Lawson had already fallen behind teammate Lindblad, who Norris passed for sixth on Lap 12. By Lap 15, rain was less likely, and Antonelli extended his lead to 2.3 seconds. Leclerc and Hamilton kept Piastri and Norris at bay. Lawson pitted on Lap 16, dropping to 13th, as Norris closed in on Piastri. Lindblad pitted a lap later, rejoining just ahead of Lawson, and they battled for 12th.

Lawson briefly went onto the gravel at Les Combes on Lap 17, but Lindblad held his position. Verstappen pitted on Lap 18, returning in sixth ahead of Hadjar, as a brief Virtual Safety Car cleared debris. Antonelli, the race leader, pitted a lap later, allowing Leclerc to lead before rejoining in fifth, ahead of Verstappen. Norris overtook Piastri at the chicane on Lap 19, but Piastri regained the spot on the Kemmel Straight, as the McLaren teammates battled before their pit stops.

A second VSC was deployed for debris, allowing both Ferraris, Piastri, Hadjar, and the two Audis to pit. This was ideal for Leclerc, who rejoined ahead of Antonelli and Verstappen, taking the net race lead, while Norris led by staying on track. Piastri gained a position as Hamilton served a five-second penalty. The Ferrari driver lost time after clipping a mechanic during his pit exit and was investigated for an unsafe release. Leclerc regained the lead on Lap 23, overtaking Norris on the Kemmel Straight and extending his lead over Antonelli to 2.3 seconds. Antonelli passed Norris three laps later and began chasing Leclerc, with the gap at 2.9 seconds by Lap 26.

Verstappen overtook Norris, who had not yet pitted, on Lap 29 for third place, while Piastri closed in on Norris. Norris pitted on Lap 31 but had a slow stop, rejoining in eighth. Lawson battled the Alpine pair for the final points, with Colapinto passing both on the Kemmel Straight for 10th. Norris climbed to seventh on Lap 32 by overtaking Bortoleto and aimed to catch Hadjar, 11 seconds ahead. At the front, Antonelli closed Leclerc’s lead to under a second by Lap 33 but couldn't pass him on the Kemmel Straight.

A lap later, Antonelli overtook Leclerc to regain the lead with 10 laps remaining and maintained it despite Leclerc's pursuit. Hamilton and Norris advanced, with Hamilton challenging Piastri for fourth. Hamilton attempted an inside move on Piastri at Les Combes on Lap 39 but succeeded one lap later to secure fourth.

Piastri was instructed to stay within five seconds of Hamilton, who was under investigation for a pit incident. Meanwhile, Norris reduced Hadjar's lead to three seconds by Lap 41 and closed the gap to within a second by Lap 43 but couldn't overtake before the finish line.

F1 resumes next weekend with the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.
