Brodie Kostecki has challenged comments made by Triple Eight boss Jamie Whincup, who suggested that Ford’s recent engine reliability issues during the Enduro Cup were caused by drivers over-revving during downshifts.

While Supercars have a 7,500rpm limit, mechanical gearshifts allow engines to exceed this during down-changes, a practice Kostecki argues is common among all drivers and not a valid excuse for mechanical failures. Whincup claims that feedback from the United States indicates these engines are not designed for such high revs, noting that international counterparts typically use paddle-shift systems that prevent over-revving.

Kostecki countered that labeling the driver input as the primary cause is a cop-out, noting that Ford and Toyota engines contain more complex valvetrain components than the simpler Chevrolet pushrod motors.

He questioned the fairness of requiring different engine architectures to adhere to the same service intervals, suggesting that the additional moving parts in Ford and Toyota powerplants may necessitate more frequent maintenance. As teams prepare for the Bathurst 1000, concerns regarding engine reliability and parity remain a significant focus for the field.
